The PILAS Lab welcomes undergraduate research assistants (“labbies”) who want hands-on research experience. Research opportunities are limited and not accessible to everyone, and we want your time in the lab to build the skills you need for graduate school or any career where research and data analysis matter.

What You’ll Do
Each research assistant joins a Research Pod (EEG, Behavioral, or Survey) and is mentored by a graduate student. In your pod, you’ll learn how to design studies, run participants, clean and analyze data, and share findings. Typical tasks include data cleaning, coding, and running participants.
The whole lab meets weekly. Lab meetings include updates and kudos, article discussions, mock thesis and dissertation proposals, and professional development such as poster creation, CV workshops, and grad school conversations. New labbies are also paired with a more senior RA who helps them settle into the lab community.
Expectations
- About 10 hours per week in the lab during the quarter (excluding holidays, breaks, and finals week)
- Registration for Undergraduate Research Credits (PSY 401), so your lab work appears on your transcript and counts in your schedule
- Attendance at weekly lab meetings
- Completion of CITI human subjects training
Research assistants in good standing may have the opportunity to complete a thesis, project, or independent study using data from their pod, with approval from Dr. Carbajal.
